A bench in front of a trimmed hedge

Don't get caught out.

Spring is on its way. Don’t forget to trim your hedges before the growing and nesting season starts.

If one of your hedges is next to a footway, footpath, bridleway or carriageway, you have a legal responsibility to ensure that vegetation from your property does not obstruct this public highway.

If you do not trim back your hedges, Calderdale Council may raise the issue with you and specify a time limit for remedial work. If you do not take corrective action within this time frame, they can issue a formal notice for the work to be undertaken, and if you leave it, they have the power to do the work and charge you for it.
